Wifi is another form of data transference that is found mainly in consoles, laptops, printers and other things. Its main function is used in electronics to help access the internet on the go, it helps access files and audio but only in homes and offices. There are however places that can offer free wifi such as Mc Donalds which the public can freely access at any time.
Wifi works by using "hotspots" these are foundin varoius interconnected accesss points often these are found in homes but in large citys these can be found in telephone boxes, streets and shops. Most WIFI is available free of charge in most area's it allows users to communicate with each other on the internet or in gaming using wireless ad-hoc network.
Wifi is often found in airports and buisnesses to attract customers where they can use devices such as mobile phones, digital camaras and laptops can all access it. Using local area networks it allows users to connect online without the use of cables. It has a range of 32m area span and its used in shops for checking inventory. If it is used in shops then this could be usefull in later developement in my product developement which can be used in the location of finding objects.

One form of data transference is Radio-frequency identification also known as RFID. It is a method that can basically be described as a electronic barcode. able to withstand the harshest of environments it was able to track products and items that could be used in places such as dig sites and industrial places. This works in two parts the first is known as a integrated circuit . This stores and processes information and the seconds is just a antenna which transmit’s the signal.
Besides barcodes RFID tags can do things that barcodes cannot such read book covers and can read things whilst moving. This was supposed to improve customer and staff productivity and has done so tremendously in shops all over the country such as ASDA.
It was originally made for the soviet union as a espionage tool however its design even though made a efficient device for transmitting radio waves it could identify things. However the technology it provided was used to identify Plaines in world war two known as the IFF transponder but was later remade by Charles Walton which has since been used in shops and other places to locate objects.

Arcade

Upon a trip to the Hollywood bowls at Cardiff bay we were asked to look at the different machines and games that we could play to see what different features they had compared to techniquest. First thing I noticed was that it had a large screen unlike Techniquest its machines were built with the intention in getting you to spend money unlike Techniquest. Because of its large screen it attracts people to play it, its made from colourful plastic and has dazzling lights that is hard not to notice even in a crowded room full of other machines. Its called Manic panic ghost its objective seems to be to hit gousts on a screen with a motion sensor device. However the tools needed for this are confusing as they look like phones instead of weapons that leave the user befuddled. There are cultural restraints as there is a pink weapon for a girl and a blue weapon for a boy. But when playing as two player the screen splits so its easier for both to play the game and there is plenty of information to be given. However where money is put into the machine is awkward as its placed so far down that you almost don’t see it. Overall I like how the machine is laid out and seems to be quite pleasant compared to the others in the arcade.

Another form of data transference is Bluetooth , invented in Sweden by Jaap Haartsen and Sven Mattisson who were working with Ericson. it’s a wireless protocol utilizing short-range communication technology. It transfers data over short distances from mobile devices. It was designed to synchronise multiple devices together and overcome any difficulties that came from doing so. It does this by using radio technology called frequency hopping spectrum spread, this cuts up the data into 75 parts that are easier to transfer. Bluetooth is now used in video game consoles, computer printers, digital cameras . The ranges of Bluetooth can be from 1-100 meters and there are a range of wireless products that can be used with Bluetooth. such as hands free head sets, wireless keyboards, printers an video game controllers are installed with Bluetooth. Bluetooth has developed into many different versions these are 1.0,1.1,1.2,2.0 and 2.1 each version has advanced combining new features new features and backwards compatibility. Future plans are being made to enable Bluetooth to become faster and provide information to customers. Because Bluetooth can transfer data quickly and efficiently to devices in a short amount of time over short distances this can be very helpful. I can use this information to design a devise to help find a customers shopping list items.

In order to build my device I have had to look into how supermarket check stocks. Originally I believed this was only lists of products that was kept on lists but apparently three was more to it then I thought . Barcodes are the most common way of checking stock yet I knew not what barcodes did. After some research on Wikipedia I found that barcodes is a optical machine which is a readable representation of data which is data in lines. The history of barcodes began when student Bernard silver of Drexel institute of technology, Philadelphia worked on a variety of systems from optical soundtracks to Morse code. His patent idea led to the “classifying apparatus and method”. it was from this concept that led to the universal product code which in 1966 was to be used as automated checkout systems. Using the bar codes and a standardised 11-didgit checkout code they made a system to print and read the code. This was developed by IBM and many others. The IBM UPC became standard in supermarkets and it stayed legible even in moist and damp conditions. The most used scanner was a fixed light and single photosencer which comes in three types used today. These are the RS-232 barcode scanner, the second is PS/2 or AT. And the third is the USB scanner. Now that I know about the industry I went to look at other forms of data transference.

My next idea was when I was out shopping, which is not often. I found it very difficult to find products I wanted as most ingredients I needed were in many different isles. After some thoughts I figured out that perhaps I could make a device to help families and everyday shoppers find there products. I wasn’t sure how this could be done at first. So I will have to do some research on items that can do something similar. I found that stores have a similar device that keeps stock of items.

My next idea was looking at designing a darts pouch for the local darts team which the women there wanted something other then plain black plastic pouches. At first I thought of what materials I could use and how I could make something like that and although it was a good idea to follow I did not want to make it. I didn’t want to make it because something like it had already been done before and I wanted to try to design something different.

First thing I have to do is find a community with a need for a product. My first idea was to do with advertising as my aunts made clothing. I thought I could use windows media player and photoshop to create a animated advert. However this idea seemed to be something I had done befor and I would much prefer to try something new. So I didn’t take this idea on board but I had some sewing experience so I could use this later in other idea’s.

Speed?

Speed? This was our assignment was to find out what we interpreted as speed. Taking pictures of things we thought of as something to do with speed. What I thought of speed was that is was how fast things move such as walking, driving ,running, cycling such is the image above shows. But I also thought maybe speed is growth how a child grows from child to adult or a seed to flower maybe speed was to do with that. Or perhaps speed could be how things decay with the speed of time or how speed is controlled such as traffic lights to help slow down speed. All these thoughts of speed made me think of different possibilities speed could mean as it can mean something to one person and something else to another.

Web, mobile game design stuff

^^ went on a fun little trip 2day took lots of pics of the word speed. Went to cardiff museum and basicly being tourests lol. We later visited Howard gardens which was a cute building with lots of facilitys that we could use maybe if we are good lol.

Introduction
Our first assignment was that we needed to design something specifically for a community. For the next seven weeks I shall be designing a product for a particular audience. Using materials and many different resources that are available and exploring the history behind similar objects.. I will explore different methods of design and creativity in order to come up with a design to closely fill the needs of the communities desire.
