What i think of this module

Assessment
The model that that I delved into filled me with much insight into the world of modernism and the history of arts development.through this module I was able to learn various artists work, there styles and the way situations at the time effected the artists works. I was able to see how modernism effected britain its people and how items changed with more variety available to the public. I found that this module was most insightfull into how modernisim effected how people saw children, slavery and women during this time. Women became more respectfull, slavery was abolished but it helped mass consumption and the idea of childhood was invented through modernism. Different products were designed for different purposes, products for cleaning and different age clothing. I liked how salividor dali and others dramaticly changed our views on art and the way we look it.
I learnt over the course of this module about how advertisement has made have a dramatic change in in the way things were sold and how the concept of shopping was invented.

My essay will be researching and investigating children's book s. Following there development from 1795 to 1945 .I will looking at there illustration that surrounds it and there artists who developed the wondrous fictional characters that inspired children's imagination for over 200 years.
I will be comparing the artists work by many different factors such as dates, mediums, and references.
Children's books were at first made for the purpose of education with differences being that they have more illustration to describe situation's and events then adult books. That being said there are many adults books that could be considered for children such as “Tarzan of the apes” and “The adventures of Tom Sayer” . However there are also children's books that adults also enjoy such as J.K Rowling's harry potter series. As time has past children's books have changed from more adult fictional novels to simple illustrated pages such as alphabet books. This has helped childhood as being a time were young people became children as the were given a period in life captured within the pages of these books. It shows that it is a time of imagination, learning and simplicity unlike adulthood where things are complex ed and complicated. By changing illustration, by changing books it gave a name to this age period and help stimulate the creative mind of a younger generation this can be seen from as far as the 16th century to as recent as the 1930’s shown below.

The first image is from one of the earliest children's books found in John Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress (1679).A story of a man who runs away from home to seek answers and certainty he is challenged by a numbers of problems which he overcomes with faith.
Dr Andersen was the one who illustrated this in the first addition copies in 1806. He used detailed wood engravings and printing to achieve the sharp black lines and quality's which can be seen within this picture.
The second is Attwell Mable Lucie a popular illustrator in the most of her paintings are based on her young daughter penny and are done in detailed watercolors and pencil.this picture was from the novel The ugly duckling.
The two come from very different area’s one post modernism and and the other is modern. Dr Andersen reflects a time where violence and graphical detail had no meaning in terms of what it could do for a child its was simplify socially acceptable as it was mostly adults who were expected to read these books. Although these stories were filled with imagination and many biblical references to help provide moral values in society they never portrayed innocence and youth during this period. However after 200 years of change and the second book is the complete opposite it reflects a time of joy and colour.the illustration is more brighter and rounder, visually pleasing then the hollow faces of the people in the previous image. Anderson's picture shows a high reference to death yet the other is filled with hope and laughter and dramatic change in mood yet a change in views of what was considered a children's book in there era. Both use too completely different ways of design the first image consists of black print most likely for mass publishing by printing machines. The other is a soft painted water made by hand and then photocopied and distributed by mass copiers. During The first images time they could not colour the images as this would be too time consuming yet the second because the technology was available could freely do this. But the add to overall charm of the pictures.
Below are images that reflect a changing Britain they are both from the same period using the same type of fictional characters yet have dramatic styles and differences that reflect there place in time.

The first image is from the book The water babies by Charles Kingsley and illustrated by Jessie Willcox Smith made in 1862. This book is based on the adventures of a young boy being tragically killed and turned into a waterbabie were he learns valuable life lessons to become a real boy again. The second is Alice in wonderland made in 1865 by Lewis Carroll and illustrated by Arthur Rackham. It follows the journey of a young girl who travels to a mysterious land of fantasy and nonsense.
Both stories are a large resource of life lessons and learning for children such as in the water babies the book make many references to worshiping the Christian God such as when the book states “grace Of Highest God that loves His creatures so”.its encouragement to children to be christian as most people at that time were made to practice this religion. As well as The water babies ,Alice in wonderland also teaches children as it quotes many of the lessons that were learned during this period. Such as “How doth the little busy bee” a popular rhyme in schools to help children remember things.yet there importance lies not with there ability to teach but the way contradict many of what many great scientists and theorists at the time were discovering. Such as Charles Darwin's theory of evolution. Many children were so drawn in to this way of thinking of creatures that were not real existed, which was what parents or teachers did not want at this time. The two images are made from ink and watercolour yet the water babies is made with pure water colours. Smith uses a soft form of watercolour making the characters seem gentle and innocent.Yet Rackham uses dark mysterious colours to give a sense of isolation and confusion. Both are fables of enchantment yet one resembles the lighter side of stories whilst the other seems a lot more detailed and cynical.
My conclusion is that although the books over the years have dramatic changed they still retain that imaginative world that is still respected today . I set out to find out how childhood and technology's have changed during the times of modernism and in return gained valuable incite to how children's stories have dramatically altered.

What is moderinsm? moderism is ideas, beliefs and attitudes. Modernism is sciance and industry. But modernism is a time in the 20th cenury we all look back to as a period where hundred perhaps thousesnds of diffrnt changes were accuring.it is this time where poets and artists got there greatest freedom and insperation from. modernism changed the way people think the way things where contrained and realesed a whole diffrent approach to life.

post modernism
During post modernism times where much diffrent god and relidgion governed how we thought and believed. Yet in the 16th century this became challenged by the masses and the system of place and status in the 16th century began to be disused.People began to have more faith and supposrt in themselves and not just in the teachings of god.Printing and inventing also emerged in this changing time. The catholic church views no longer governed the masses lives and people began to see that the world was round and that it did go around the sun.
People began to debate and produce more ideas they questioned past beliefs and explored sciance and nature.somthing that was never attempted befor. and in doing so opend new possibilitys and created a more open society.

With this new way of thinking inventions came from far and near and enabled people to build trains to go to new places and speed up industry. Artists where able to express themselves more questioning there viewiners and experienment with new ways of painting. yet moderisim had its flaurs it disreagarded the past losing its respect in those that came befor only moving on for the sake of development.

Such notable people from this period where

New forms of art emerged too such as

Consumption can mean to satisfy the needs of the masses such as food, clothes and travel. Consumption could be to do with needs which are biological physical and phsycolodgical. because of mass production there were many more good that the public could choose from and thus led to the development of more diversity's of taste retail development and new design in products.

Because of the need for different products new inventions were made such as domestic appliances that soon replaced maids and butlers for cleaning.
because more goods began to appear on the market manufacturers help make whats we know as diversification which made differences between classes.
men and women became different from each other as products were made for women and men. children had toys and clothes different from adults which created the period we know as childhood.
soap was a important issue as soaps for diffrent puposes which made people become more contious of cleanlyness. paris began to change due to the growth of shops and department stores.

-advertising was developed
-new typeface for editing
-education system for children

Society wanted to make more goods then supplies could manage and so the industrial revolution came about to supply that need.

Feudal society
Hierarchical
Traditional
Religious

Befor their was limitation to products that people could purchase but with machines production a wide range of products more people had more variety to choose from. Examples of this date back as far as the feudal society.

People all had a station and place and there were little diversion between them. The church was very influential and their was little people could do to improve this unlike today where we can improve our social standing.

In the feudal system there were peasents and cratsmen the peasents worked the land but the craftsmen were given permission to use there skills by lords.

In the idustrial revololution population also increased this was due to more jobs and more resorces being available which cuase fear amoung the growing society.
Middle ,Upper and poor class was created and citys were seperated into diffrent areas to satisfy the needs of its people.Transport influenced the growth of its people as it enabled people to see more of the world. This influenced artists like Turner. There were banks available for storing money and there were explorations that created the slave triangle.

Diversion of labour
-dividing the production process up into a series of steps.
-no one person has controle of the product
-the role of the designer becomes one stage in the design process
-alienation a sence of lack of controle and power after ones life and fruits of ones labour.

Standisation of parts
-can be replaced
-morable metal type is earliest example

Design is a range of drawings or ideas which can be developed into a a final thing. it is the creation and realisation of an idea created or recorded via many different mediums.

-Researching visual perfection for a specific user using skill craft and creativity.
-Gradual development of a idea or subject.
-Difficult to agree or disagree with what design is.
-Perfection is a difficult thing to agree on relative levels of perfection ,The functual,The perfect,The ideal.

Its a matter of opinion. Different audiences, tastes, needs, likes, and wants will be diverse. We live in a pharalistic society- more then one point of view.

Illustration is a detailed piece of artwork based for a specific theme or need. Forming and image to suit or assist in understanding things.

Final Report

My response to this project was to develop a product that could help people. I thought of a device that could help people find there grocery's in supermarkets.my device is perfectly suited for family's and people who are looking to find food easily in stores.I hope my device will be small practical and easy to use.
My first priority was to look at ways this could be done and the technology behind them. To do this I
looked at RFID a form of data tracking which is used in most stores to help find products, keep stock and organise them. It reads barcodes but it can read them while the items are moving. It is similar to other forms of tracking like Wifi, found in stores, Internet cafes’s and some phone box’s in major city's.
Bluetooth is also something I thought of using as it’s a device that transfers data in a short range, which in a store full of products all within close range I believed this would be use full. I also looked at barcodes and how they work in stores read by RFID but are also read by USB scanners.
so even after looking at these major forms of data trasference I discovered that my device would be better as a application they are found in I-phones and mobile devices. They are easy to download and are easily available online. The program works by using the application software to use RFID to lock on to the location of the item and directs the customer to the item in question.
The user must first turn on the device enter the items into the application and then go to the store. The RFID scans the items and transfers the data back into the device. It also helps the user by telling them how far the items are and also alternatives if the customer cannot find or wants a cheaper option. I feel companies may want to purchase this device like Tesco or ASDA because it will speed up shopping for customers make things less stressfull and suggestive sale for the users which will increase profit for the company's. However if it is a child or old age pensioner it will not do suggestive sale as this this is taking advantage of there age.
I made some sketches of the device and what it will look like on my device and how it functions and works. I thought perhaps this way it would be easy to show how the product works and how the user can manage it. More importantly demonstrates how simple the item is to use in a crowded store. As the application is found in mobile phones it will be light weight and easily moved around. Easily accessible and its destined that way so it will be comfortable for any user. But also because they will be expert users of a phone and novice users of the device it will also be simple to learn how to use and access.
I looked at the Christene Faulkners Theories of computer interaction found that applications, software and programs and found that her theories help me develop what my device should or should not do. They should be easy to function and should give sufficient feedback and they should have not have too many options to confuse the user.they should also give help the user and that no special training will be necessary. This can be found in the book called The essence of human computer interaction where she has many theories on how applications and software should work.
I found after the application “Tasty tracker Mk 1” was completed I was satisfied how the software would work and how the application on mobile phones would work. I feel that this idea will benefit shoppers and family's alike and that it will enrich the shopping experience.

According to the book written by Christine Faulkner, The essence of human computer interaction my application should apply to users who are experts of phones. Yet they will be a novice user with the application.
In theory her book suggests that my device should be easy to understand as "all initiatives should come from the computer" which means that my application should require information within it so at any time the users will be able to use the device. However i do not want to overcomplicated the device with over the top information and keys that will confuse the user. As stated with her book "All inputs should be brief" this should allow the user to move around the application more freely.
They should also be "consistent with the user expectation" which means that all the input in my device should work as expected and respond as required for my user.
"no special training should be necessary" my application should not require any one to be skilled to use it and should be as easy as opening a closed door. Yet with the device "all system messages should be clear and nonvocal" so the user does not have to read manuals all the time.
According to Christine Faulkner however their should be only a small set of options that the user can choose from so they do not get frustrated with so many options.
But also the user "should control the pace of interaction" so that its not to fast or too slow to use then like a automatic pacer.
Its clear to me also that thier should be that "user desition making should be in responce to a specific request for outcome" so that they expect what will happen insted of complications.
Also thier should be "help available" and "sufficiant feedback" to help and assist he user but also the is enough infortion so that user knows that he/she knows what they have done is correct.
These theories from Christene Faulkner are to show what a device is supposed to achieve and provide for its users and i feel with this information this should improve my device.

The layout of my appication would be somthing like this (figure A) shows drawings of what the application will look like. (Figure B) is the actual device in the phone. The device has the ability to track items in a shop using RFID.

Above (figure a) is a simple diagram that shows how the product works. There are too processes to this design the long process with needing food is to go to the store and find it yourself. The short process is to use the item locator called "tasty tracker". This will help find items in less to no time at all.

People 10

Looking into my product device i have made a few drawings and diagrams to show what my product would look like. I also looked at some other simular applications already in place now.

This is what the prototype looks like in a diagam. Here we can see me in my kitchen with obviously nothing to eat. I then add a list of things i need into the application. After adding the list to my mobile phone applictaion i then proceeded to Marks and Spencers where my shopping could be found. I then looked at the information on my device and pointed the device in the direction of the products. It read the nearest item on my list and led me to its location then i checked of the item and it led me to my next item.
My device uses RFID and bluetooth in order to find all of the products on the list and helps guide me to its location.
Below is a sample diagram of what my device does and how it works apon usage.

The more I began to look into it I found that my item finder would proberly work better as a application, a software found in most products Applications are software which can used by the user to enable them to preform various tasks. Its typically found as word processors and media players but can be found in packages which are sold in a large files.
Many people can make user written software that is a tailor made program made only for the user’s spesific needs. These can be anything from Macros to animation scripts.
Embedded software are software applications that are found in microwaves and dvd players these applications that are added during manifacuring.
There are various different software types that are available enterprize software, content access software, media development software.

Wifi is another form of data transference that is found mainly in consoles, laptops, printers and other things. Its main function is used in electronics to help access the internet on the go, it helps access files and audio but only in homes and offices. There are however places that can offer free wifi such as Mc Donalds which the public can freely access at any time.
Wifi works by using "hotspots" these are foundin varoius interconnected accesss points often these are found in homes but in large citys these can be found in telephone boxes, streets and shops. Most WIFI is available free of charge in most area's it allows users to communicate with each other on the internet or in gaming using wireless ad-hoc network.
Wifi is often found in airports and buisnesses to attract customers where they can use devices such as mobile phones, digital camaras and laptops can all access it. Using local area networks it allows users to connect online without the use of cables. It has a range of 32m area span and its used in shops for checking inventory. If it is used in shops then this could be usefull in later developement in my product developement which can be used in the location of finding objects.

One form of data transference is Radio-frequency identification also known as RFID. It is a method that can basically be described as a electronic barcode. able to withstand the harshest of environments it was able to track products and items that could be used in places such as dig sites and industrial places. This works in two parts the first is known as a integrated circuit . This stores and processes information and the seconds is just a antenna which transmit’s the signal.
Besides barcodes RFID tags can do things that barcodes cannot such read book covers and can read things whilst moving. This was supposed to improve customer and staff productivity and has done so tremendously in shops all over the country such as ASDA.
It was originally made for the soviet union as a espionage tool however its design even though made a efficient device for transmitting radio waves it could identify things. However the technology it provided was used to identify Plaines in world war two known as the IFF transponder but was later remade by Charles Walton which has since been used in shops and other places to locate objects.

Arcade

Upon a trip to the Hollywood bowls at Cardiff bay we were asked to look at the different machines and games that we could play to see what different features they had compared to techniquest. First thing I noticed was that it had a large screen unlike Techniquest its machines were built with the intention in getting you to spend money unlike Techniquest. Because of its large screen it attracts people to play it, its made from colourful plastic and has dazzling lights that is hard not to notice even in a crowded room full of other machines. Its called Manic panic ghost its objective seems to be to hit gousts on a screen with a motion sensor device. However the tools needed for this are confusing as they look like phones instead of weapons that leave the user befuddled. There are cultural restraints as there is a pink weapon for a girl and a blue weapon for a boy. But when playing as two player the screen splits so its easier for both to play the game and there is plenty of information to be given. However where money is put into the machine is awkward as its placed so far down that you almost don’t see it. Overall I like how the machine is laid out and seems to be quite pleasant compared to the others in the arcade.

Another form of data transference is Bluetooth , invented in Sweden by Jaap Haartsen and Sven Mattisson who were working with Ericson. it’s a wireless protocol utilizing short-range communication technology. It transfers data over short distances from mobile devices. It was designed to synchronise multiple devices together and overcome any difficulties that came from doing so. It does this by using radio technology called frequency hopping spectrum spread, this cuts up the data into 75 parts that are easier to transfer. Bluetooth is now used in video game consoles, computer printers, digital cameras . The ranges of Bluetooth can be from 1-100 meters and there are a range of wireless products that can be used with Bluetooth. such as hands free head sets, wireless keyboards, printers an video game controllers are installed with Bluetooth. Bluetooth has developed into many different versions these are 1.0,1.1,1.2,2.0 and 2.1 each version has advanced combining new features new features and backwards compatibility. Future plans are being made to enable Bluetooth to become faster and provide information to customers. Because Bluetooth can transfer data quickly and efficiently to devices in a short amount of time over short distances this can be very helpful. I can use this information to design a devise to help find a customers shopping list items.

In order to build my device I have had to look into how supermarket check stocks. Originally I believed this was only lists of products that was kept on lists but apparently three was more to it then I thought . Barcodes are the most common way of checking stock yet I knew not what barcodes did. After some research on Wikipedia I found that barcodes is a optical machine which is a readable representation of data which is data in lines. The history of barcodes began when student Bernard silver of Drexel institute of technology, Philadelphia worked on a variety of systems from optical soundtracks to Morse code. His patent idea led to the “classifying apparatus and method”. it was from this concept that led to the universal product code which in 1966 was to be used as automated checkout systems. Using the bar codes and a standardised 11-didgit checkout code they made a system to print and read the code. This was developed by IBM and many others. The IBM UPC became standard in supermarkets and it stayed legible even in moist and damp conditions. The most used scanner was a fixed light and single photosencer which comes in three types used today. These are the RS-232 barcode scanner, the second is PS/2 or AT. And the third is the USB scanner. Now that I know about the industry I went to look at other forms of data transference.

My next idea was when I was out shopping, which is not often. I found it very difficult to find products I wanted as most ingredients I needed were in many different isles. After some thoughts I figured out that perhaps I could make a device to help families and everyday shoppers find there products. I wasn’t sure how this could be done at first. So I will have to do some research on items that can do something similar. I found that stores have a similar device that keeps stock of items.

My next idea was looking at designing a darts pouch for the local darts team which the women there wanted something other then plain black plastic pouches. At first I thought of what materials I could use and how I could make something like that and although it was a good idea to follow I did not want to make it. I didn’t want to make it because something like it had already been done before and I wanted to try to design something different.

First thing I have to do is find a community with a need for a product. My first idea was to do with advertising as my aunts made clothing. I thought I could use windows media player and photoshop to create a animated advert. However this idea seemed to be something I had done befor and I would much prefer to try something new. So I didn’t take this idea on board but I had some sewing experience so I could use this later in other idea’s.

Speed?

Speed? This was our assignment was to find out what we interpreted as speed. Taking pictures of things we thought of as something to do with speed. What I thought of speed was that is was how fast things move such as walking, driving ,running, cycling such is the image above shows. But I also thought maybe speed is growth how a child grows from child to adult or a seed to flower maybe speed was to do with that. Or perhaps speed could be how things decay with the speed of time or how speed is controlled such as traffic lights to help slow down speed. All these thoughts of speed made me think of different possibilities speed could mean as it can mean something to one person and something else to another.

Introduction
Our first assignment was that we needed to design something specifically for a community. For the next seven weeks I shall be designing a product for a particular audience. Using materials and many different resources that are available and exploring the history behind similar objects.. I will explore different methods of design and creativity in order to come up with a design to closely fill the needs of the communities desire.

Magazine Review

Kia Leona Hughes reviews WWW.AWN.COM

The website im going to review is www.awn.com or Animation world network in short . it’s a site which features information on movie trailers, short animation and clips that have been newly released for viewing entertainment. First glances this website were quite poor in my opinion simply because I felt that the background was quite plain but it doesn’t draw to much attention to the information on hand which I feel is a agreeable thing. The WebPages are bright yellow and blue presumably to make the text on the page stand out but also to match the logo of the site. There is no price for viewing this site all animation is free to watch it simply shares video clips from over 151 countries world wide and the site boldly states that it provides “a wide range of interesting, relevant and helpful information pertaining to all aspects of animation“. This is clear to a certain extent yet I feel it has done to much to promote other products and websites then on the actual animation. This can be evident from the numerous advertisements displayed on the webpage such as Shapeways and Intel software dispatch. I feel this spoils the feel of the website taking away its look of a professional site. The site itself is targeted at universities and students that have a general interest in animation. Its provides reviews on different animation festivals, shows and shorts and is frequently updated. It provides new information daily which is a impressive as most sites are updated weekly and the information is posted in columns on the front page. After browsing thought the pages I found that the information provided on the pages was strait to the point but not exciting enough I feel to keep the reader interested , However this can be just a matter in opinion.
One particular review I found quite interesting was its response to Spore creature creator, im not sure what it has to do with animation it is more appealing to those of video game design. However the reviewer comments on its excellent game play its groundbreaking graphics and its intelligent interface. The Evolution of Spore by Janet Hetherington written on the 08/09/08 looks into the basic game play on Will Writes newest creation. I liked how she talks about how the players can interact with there friends. This is evident as she states the games allows “players to create and evolve life, establish tribes, build civilizations, sculpt worlds and then explore universes created by other players”.
After further reading I found that the websites videos available look impressive and that the overall feel of the site was adequate but lacking in design. I would think that a Web, Mobile and Game design student would like to use this page as it does give interesting idea’s and help on how to animate characters and what others have done in there work. There are reviews that cover Video games for different interfaces that may be useful or interesting to a Web, Mobile and Game student. I likes the video’s this sight has to offer and the reviews this sight has to offer was intriguing yet I still feel this sight was lacking. It could have been better layout and less advertisements but other then that I felt It held up to most expectations.

My rating 6/10
